Taking family pictures whether immediate family or extended family pictures is really important. These are memories in the making. A place where moments are frozen in time. Kids are only little once. You want to be able to look back and remember those sweet moments in their life, such as birthdays, first day of school, kindergarten, sweet 16, quinceinera, graduation, high school graduation, marriage, newborn photos and more. You also only have one life. Taking pictures throughout ones life can give your family special memories and moments of you when you are gone. Photos are something that can last a lifetime and even more.
Taking photos can also bring families together especially ones who live further away. It may be difficult to get everyone together for pictures, but in the end creating these moments is special. It is something that would be a fabulous gift for grandparents and parents. It something that can create bonding moments. It something that can reunite a family when they don't see one another a lot. It can be an experience everyone can remember for a long time. Taking photos doesn't have to feel like a chore. Taking photos can be fun and sometimes even entertaining. There are times I wish I could have a camera attached to the back of me to see parents when they are trying to get their kids to smile. Sometimes it is so comical.
Taking pictures can also give you something to hangup in your home. It is an art piece that you can share with your guest when they come over. I love looking at other people's pictures when I go to their home. I love seeing the joy, the special moments, the memories. I love to hear the stories from the families about what was happening this moment. Some of the stories I hear break my heart. Some of the stories make me laugh. Some of the stories bring me so much joy. Art can be an ice breaker in awkward situations because it can get people talking and sharing stories with one another.
Family photos doesn't have to be boring. You can have some creative photo shoots. I love to hear your ideas on what you are wanting when taking photos. Themed sessions are fun. What are some examples of these themed sessions? Christmas Family photos, pumpkin patch photos, Easter bunny photos, cake smash pictures, baking cookies with Santa, cooking with grandma, gender reveal with smoke bombs, gender reveals with paint, car wash session, rainbow baby session, shaving head session for cancer patients, and more. There are so many ideas you can come up with for a session and I am open to hear what you want to do.
When taking pictures, there can be a mix of posed session and candid pictures. Candid pictures can be guided. Like whisper silly phrases in your spouses ears. It's tickle fight time with the kids. Fake laugh which always leads to the real thing because everyone starts laughing at each other. Lets play ring a round a rosy. Let see who can scare each other the most. Run up behind someone and spin them around. Sometimes the guidance seems silly or feels a little strange but you would be amazed at how those pictures actually turn out. Those are sometimes people favorite photos from the session. The reaction are more natural and more genuine. We may start with the posed pictures first just to get everyone comfortable. It is strange in the beginning because it isn't natural to stand in front of someone and let them take your picture especially if you are not familiar with your photographer. Sometimes it takes the first 15 minutes to start feeling more relaxed and open with your photographer. Mixing these types of pictures up, you have such a variety of photos to choose from.
When you are booking your session, I want you to think about what you want to do with these photos. Are you wanting to print them? Do you want to only post them on your social media or keep on your phone. Think about what you are wearing. Think about the aesthetic you want to achieve in your photos. Make sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing. Don't wear something that shows your insecurities. Everyone has them. Wear clothes that are flattering to you. Also let your photographer know if there is something you are uncomfortable with on your body. Knowing this can help us as your photographer, move you in ways to hid or conceal the concerned areas. There are tricks that can help minimize certain parts of your body during photos. As a photographer I want to show you and your personality, so I do not edit to make you skinner or younger looking. I want you to be reflected. But knowing those insecurities I can help you during the session.
I want to again emphasize why taking photos are important. They are moments you cannot get back. They are moments in time that can be preserved for a lifetime and longer. It is moments that you want to remember. Because of insecurities, do not ever not take pictures. Your children and family love you as you are. They want to remember you as you are. You feel that way about your kids. Your kids feel that way about you. Don't hide yourself in photos because you hate how you look. You are the only you. No one else can be you. Everyone wants you in the picture not anyone else. Mom, Dad, grandparent, child you are important. You are loved and people want to know you. Family photography is not just about taking pictures; it’s about telling a story and creating a legacy. Don't wait to take photos with a photographer either. Pick up your phone or a camera and documenting your life yourself. Professional photography is great, but taking your own photos can be just as important.
I invite you to share some of your family photos to the comments. I would love seeing you and your family. I want to share those special moments with you.
